Cambridge United winger Robbie Willmott has joined Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Luton Town for £50,000.
The 20-year-old has signed an 18-month deal with the Hatters after the U's had already rejected two five-figure bids from unnamed clubs.
Willmott has scored 10 goals in 29 games this season.
Meanwhile Cambridge striker Wayne Gray has been released from his weekly contract as part of a cost-cutting exercise by the club.
Interest in Willmott and fellow Cambridge youth product Josh Coulson has been high since the club was put up for sale in January.
"I feel it's a good move for Robbie, on a football front I'm disappointed to lose a player of his quality," said Cambridge boss Martin Ling.
AMBER ARMYU's director of football Jez George added: "We had little room for negotiation on the fee as Robbie's contract, signed in July 2009, had a release clause if a club came in with a bid of £50,000.
"Because there was only one club who matched this amount, it was impossible to push the fee any higher." |
