Cambridge's rotten run of form continued at the R Costings Abbey Stadium as they lost to an in form Wrexham. Martin Ling's team needed to get back to winning ways after a dreadful defeat at the hands of Blue Square North side Alfreton Town in the FA Trophy midweek.
Confidence after the midweek defeat was sure to be low and so it proved as the Welsh visitors set out straight out on the attack. After two minutes Pogba got a flick on to Andy Mangan, who from the left corner of the box stepped inside and arrowed a low shot into the corner. The goal was followed by "heads down" situation from players and crowd alike. It could be seen that a hiding was on the cards.
Cambridge tried to rally and fashion a chance with Clare and Willmott linking to try and get in the box but it came to nothing. Mangan the Wrexham goal machine tested Naisbitt followed by pingball in the United box which caused the ambermen problems as they found it hard to clear their lines.
Thirteen minutes in Wrexham struck a second through Pogba after goalkeeper Naisbitt parried a Keates shot. It has to be said the keeper should have done better.
Sensing real big problems Ling changed formation to 4-4-2 pushing Wayne Gray up front to partner the ineffective Daryl Clare.
Within three minutes Wrexham surged further ahead with Chris Blackburn finishing off a Naisbitt parry from a Mangan shot. At this point the Amber faithful showered the ground with loud boos no doubt burning the sore ears of Martin Ling and assistant John Schofield. It certaintly suggested it was game over and no way back.
Wrexham with a good experienced squad contiued to cause the U's all kinds of problems with Pogba in particular leading the line well. Robbie Willmott, subject of a five figure transfer bid during the week went on a couple of runs but nothing came of them. In the next few fruitless minutes only a Brian Saah booking was worth mentioning.
Five minutes before the break McAuley screwed a shot wide which drew groans by the crowd. The half time whistle was drowned out by a heavy chorus of boos and fans in the main stand vented their fury on the happless Ling.
Obviously on the end of a cup throwing telling off Cambridge came out firing on all cylinders attacking the Newmarket Road End. Robbie Willmott flashed in a free kick which Brian Saah connected but could not tuck away. Tackles started flying in from both sides but it seemed the U's were at the end of the some rough decisions.
Cambridge continued to run the game and were rewarded with a goal. Robbie Willmott smashed in a wonderful strike from the left side of the box into the top corner after he was felled by Curtis Obeng. Could this be another of those famous U's combacks. It could well have been had Wayne Gray tucked away his chance after being clean through. The striker just seem to get his feet in a tangle. The crowd sensed that wast he moment the games changed again. After this Brian Saah got his marching orders for an over zealous challange on Keates. From this moment on Wrexham used all their quality and experience to slow the game down and make use of the extra man.
The only positive you could suppose was that Cambridge kept a clean sheet in the second half and managed a good goal. Also they managed to run the game for a good twenty five minutes.
Next up Crawley. Not the type of game you would wish for, especially without the influential Brian Saah. Martin Ling will not be enjoying his weekend.
