Cambridge United finally got their first home win in 2011 beating promotion chasing York City at The R Costing's Abbey Stadium.
The U's came into the game on the back of a decent draw with promotion hopeful's Luton Town. The draw seemed to give Utd renewed belief as they stopped York's play off chase in its tracks.
Caretaker Manager Jez George made only one change to the squad with Dan Walker, who was unavailable for the Luton match, replacing Shaun Jeffers, who in the week returned to parent club Coventry City.
A nice surprise for the Ambernation was to see U's duo Josh Coulson and Simon Russell out warming up with the squad although neither were to be involved.
Utd quickly set about their business and in the first minute earned a free kick just in advance of the half way line. The kick was taken by James Jennings who lofted the ball towards the York box but the ball was repelled by the visitors' defence. A minute later full back Jennings was involved again with Liam Hughes finding him twenty five yards out but Jennings couldn't get the ball onto his favored left foot and he shot tamely at the York goal.
For the next five minutes the U's controlled the game with a period of good one touch passing and a couple of corner's one of which striker Liam Hughes put over the bar.
Slowly York started to come into the game when Till was freed by Smith and a cross was put in for McDermott whose effort was blocked by Jennings leading to a York corner. The corner was cleared by Mark Bentley.
York then had another chance when a move involving Rankine and Till led to Reed having a chance to score but the forward volleyed wide.
Cambridge again took control of the game flying forward earning two more corners after good work from the lively Jordan Patrick. The corner's came to nothing but it was good work by the U's to take control.
Within a minute the Ambermen were in front with a goal from striker Liam Hughes. Kevin Roberts had put in a cross which came off a York defender into the path of Hughes who curled the ball past the City keeper. A cool finish by the tall striker.
This sparked The Ministermen into action. Reed broke the Cambridge offside trap and smacked a shot which hit the bar and went over. Within seconds York were again wreaking havoc with Brian Saah and Ricky Wellard combining to clear the danger.
The shutout didn't last long as two minutes later York equalised when the U's failed to deal with a long throw from the left and Reed with a smart finish levelled the score. Testing times for Cambridge who would now need to call upon their new found confidence to get themselves back in front in the game.
For the next fifteen minutes before the break both sides had a couple of chances but with York looking the more threatening as Cambridge began lying deep.
The early exchanges of the of the second half saw both teams creating chances and both teams failing to finish. Hughes had a shot on the turn parried away by Ingram and Till had a shot pushed out by Brown to the feet of Rankine who put the ball into the net but was adjudged to be offside.
As the half wore on the U's again began to lie deep as York began to pile the pressure on. Cambridge then had make a change half way through the half when Berry went off with what seem like an ankle injury. Dan Walker was the man to replace him leading to a re shuffle with Wellard moving inside off the left and JP switching wings and Walker slotting in in the right hand side.
York again applied pressure with two half chances which came to nothing. They continued to peg back the U's as Kevin Roberts was forced to head behind for a corner. This led to York getting three corners in a minute which were all dealt with by the Amber defence.
Soon after the U's managed to relieve the pressure as Walker was released and set up Liam Hughes whose shot hit the post and was turned behind for a corner. Cambridge themselves now had three corners in a minute but could not take anything from them.
With just over ten minutes left Cambridge scored what proved to be the winner. The ball was pinging around 25 yards out when Mark Bentley won a tackle which took the ball forward allowing Danny Wright to run through and thump the ball home into the top corner to send the Ambernation wild. Good finish by the big man.
Big ten minutes followed for the U's could they keep York out and secure a vital win? With five minutes left Saah won a tackle on the edge of his box and strode forward a full fifty yards to the York box but could do nothing but lose the ball which handily was picked up by Jordan Patrick who set up Walker for a shot which flashed across the York goal.
York only had time for one more chance which they failed to take leading to three minutes of injury time keep ball by Cambridge in the corners of the York goaline.
The ref then blew his whistle to signal Cambridge's first home win since the turn of the year and send the Ambernation home happy on R Costing's day at the Abbey.
