WREXHAM 2-1 CAMBRIDGE UNITED

Cambridge United's FA Cup story ended in defeat losing to Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground.

Manager Jez George made two changes to the line up from Saturday's heroic match against Luton.

In form wideman Harrison Dunk came back into the starting line in place of Peter Winn and Saturday's goal hero Liam Hughes came into the line up in place of Luke Berry who dropped to the bench. With it been an FA Cup match and seven subs allowed Brown and McAuley returned to the bench along with Ryan Charles who has overcome off the field issues after being supported by the club.

With much expected from both in form sides the first fifteen minutes proved quite tame. Wrexham managed three early corners but there was no goal action.

On twenty minutes the first real chance arrived for Cambridge. It was a decent goalscoring chance. Carew sent in a cross but Michael Gash could not make best used of the chance.

United began to take control of the game and Tom Shaw was denied a shot on goal by big Mark Creighton. This was followed by a Pogba shot which went over the bar. Wrexham then managed to get two more corners with the second one seeing Knight -Percival heading just wide.

A awkward Carew cross tested the Wrexham keeper. Carew then fired in a shot which was well saved by the keeper. The rest of the half passed without incident.

The U's started the second half quickly with Gash having a big penalty shout which the ref waved away. Carew was then held back by Aston as Wrexham look to upset the Cambridge rhythm. The free kick came to nothing. United began to dominate the game and Dunk began to exert influence going on a run which led to Curtis Obeng bringing him down. The free kick was sent over by Carew but cleared by Pogba for a corner. United wasted the corner with an awful delivery.

The Ambermen then had another chance when Gash robbed Creighton and laid off for Shaw but failed to control the ball which was gathered by the keeper.

Minutes later Cambridge's resistance was broken when Wrexham took the lead. Mathias Pogba nodded home a cross after Dunk failed to clear his lines properly. Wrexham then slowed the game down upsetting the Amber rhythm. They then made a couple of changes. For the next twenty minutes there was a lack of action. Jez George then made a double change sending on Patrick and Berry for Dunk and Jarvis.

Minutes after the substitutions Wrexham went further ahead. The United defence was caught napping when a cross was sent in and ex U Danny Wright headed home. This stirred up the U's with Carew and Gash both having shots saved. Ryan Charles then came on for Gash in the last throw of the dice by manager Jez George. Charles' first contribution was to set Jordan Patrick away but the little winger shot straight at the keeper. Charles and Patrick linked up again to earn a corner but it came to nothing. With two minutes left United were given a lifeline when Michael Wylde headed home a James Jennings cross to set up a grandstand finish.

Unfortunately for The Ambermen they could not muster anything. They are now left to concentrate on finishing the season in the play off places.
