SOUTHPORT - CAMBRIDGE UTD

Cambridge United fell to an awful defeat at Haig Ave the home of Southport.

The U's came into the game on the back of eight unbeaten games including a massive win over big rivals Luton Town.

Jez George and his charges came into the game high on confidence. It must be rightly said that Jez had warned his team to be up for the fight as they could easily slip up at Southport. His squad was unchanged except for Jack Eades coming in.

Amazingly the game was over within three minutes of it starting. That's how long it took Southport to take the lead. The host's won a throw in and the throw was a long one which was cleared by the United back line. Unfortunately for them it dropped to Andy Owens who volleyed it back into the net. It could not have been a worse start for Jez George and his team.

For the next half an hour there were plenty of shots from both sides but none failed to really trouble either goalkeeper. Most of the shots were either blocked or deflected. With the score 1-0 at the break you can be sure that Jez George was ready to give out his version of the hair dryer. To be honest it was really needed as up until the break Cambridge had not turned up.

The second half started very slowly and the result looked like it would not be changing. Jez George didn't not wait long before making his first change. The change was made ten minutes into the second half. Ryan Charles came on for Rossi Jarvis with Luke Berry dropping back into the midfield making it a 4-4-2 formation.

Charles failed to have the desired effect and Cambridge were left scratching their heads. Just ten minutes later Jordan Patrick came on for Peter Winn. Patrick seemed to inject a bit of pace and creativity into the match and United managed to win two corners which came to nothing. With fifteen minutes to go George made a final sub bringing on Murtagh for the ineffectual Carew, Murtagh did have a chance to score but his curling shot curled too much. Meanwhile Jordan Patrick was causing havoc getting a number of corners and also chasing lost causes. The last few moments saw Cambridge try to snatch a goal but it was all in vain.
