Cambridge United fell to their second defeat in four days losing to Grimsby at Blundell Park.
Manager Jez George made two changes to the team that played Kidderminster Harriers at the Abbey on Saturday. James Jennings came in for Rory McAuley who dropped to bench. Jennings had previously been serving a four match ban hungover from last season. The other change saw Rossi Jarvis come in for Adam Marriott who was left out of the sixteen man squad all together.
Cambridge seem to set up 4-5-1 pre kick off in their all sky blue away kit. The toss determined that they would attack the end where The traveling Amberarmy were situated.
The game started quickly and after five minutes Harrison Dunk's shot went wide after good work from Tom Shaw. Minutes later Cambridge won the first corner of the game taken by Ashley Carew. The wide man's corner was cleared but was put back into the box and cleared for another United corner. The next corner was met by Michael Wylde whose header was put out for another corner which came to nothing.
With Cambridge applying good pressure the first booking eventually came.
Craig Disley roughed up Rossi Jarvis and earned a yellow card. For the next ten minutes the game became scrappy but with Cambridge been the better side.
On eighteen minutes Cambridge suffered a big blow when Harrison Dunk was given a straight red card for a crude tackle on
Artus. This now meant a reshuffle, leading to 4-4-1 formation.
Within minutes Luke Berry was booked for a foul on the wing. Straight after Berry's booking Kevin Roberts' robust challenge meant that he joined Berry in the book. This didn't look good for Cambridge as player's were beginning to walk a tightrope.
Just before the half hour Cambridge fell behind when
Tyrone Thompson nodded home from two yards after a corner was flicked on at the near post. It meant now that Cambridge had a tough task to get back into the match.
Surprisingly two minutes later United struck back when
a corner by Carew was delivered to the back post, where Michael Wylde headed home from close range.
In the moments before half time Duffy had two chances for Grimsby which he failed to convert. The second half started with Grimsby getting into two great positions but without really looking dangerous.
Cambridge then went onto the attack as Jarvis and Gash played a smart one - two, but Jarvis' touch was too heavy and the ball ran through to the keeper.
Grimsby then hit back with two set pieces which were cleared by Naisbitt and then Jennings. It became more apparent that Cambridge were sitting back and encouraging Grimsby to attack.
Grimsby winger
Makofo began to terrorise the United defence with his weaving runs creating chances.
On the hour Grimsby took the lead again when Makofo weaved his magic again down the left before teeing up Hearn whose effort earned Grimsby a corner. The corner came in and Rob Duffy headed home in controversial circumstances. The protests of the United defenders fell on deaf ears.
Ten more minutes of Grimsby pressure led to two more Cambridge players going into the book with James Jennings and Rossi Jarvis the culprits.
Jarvis was soon replaced by Charles who straightaway earned a corner for United. To the frustration of the U's Platt's delivery was dreadful and hacked clear by the Grimsby defence.
United began to creep back into the game and a Josh Coulson pile driver earned his team a corner which was cleared. Again United pressed forward and James Jennings went close hitting the bar from fully thirty yards.
In the closing minutes Grimsby used a substitute and played keep ball to the frustration of Cambridge.
As the final whistle went it will surely be playing on the mind of Jez George that he is already under pressure after two successive defeats. To add to his woes Harrison Dunk will now be suspended for three games.
