Cambridge went into today's match on a four game unbeaten run. This is now extended to five with a deserved draw at Gateshead.
The match began fast and furiously with both sides attacking each other. Considering Gateshead's form going into the game this was a very brave way for Cambridge to start.
The game sprung to life in the 16th minute when Cambridge took the lead through winger Ashley Carew. Striker Michael Gash pinged a crossfield pass which fell behind the Gateshead left back Sam Rents into the path of Carew who skillfully lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
This would of been the ideal start for Cambridge manager Jez George as Gateshead's recent form suggested it would have been a tough game.
Ten minutes later Cambridge should have been two nil up when striker Michael Gash had a goal disallowed. He was adjudged to be offside. Straight down the other end Danny Naisbitt was called into action when he saved from Gillies.
Minutes later Cambridge again had a chance to go two up. After a Gateshead attack Cambridge broke away quickly with pace. A beautiful pass was made wide for Ashley Carew who sent in a delightful cross into the back post where Peter Winn met the ball but headed over. This would probably turn out to be the turning point of the match.
So it proved three minutes later when Gateshead equalised. Tom Shaw gave away a free kick twenty five yards out where Gillies was set up to thunder the ball home past Naisbitt.
With Gateshead assuming control of the match they could of gone ahead when Yemi tore down the left and had a cross blocked by Coulson the ball rebounded to Yemi whose curler went over the bar.

Going into half time it was a case of a game of two half's in one half.
The second half started very much as the first with United going forward with force. Jennings had a shot tipped over which was followed by another close miss with a Gash/McAuley combo.
Next Luke Berry had a chance to score. He cleverly made space for himself inside of the box turned but only managed to blast over.
The U's continued to dominate the game until the 75th minute when Gateshead led by the dangerous Yemi cranked the pressure up.
Gillies had a chance but his bump volley was tipped over by Naisbitt. This was followed by tactical substitutions and last minute Gateshead pressure. The U's held on for a deserved and credible draw.
