CAMBRIDGE UTD 2-0 DARLINGTON

Cambridge United made it two wins in four days when then took all three points against fellow former league club Darlington.

The U's came into the game in great form. On Tuesday night they had beaten Ebbsfleet United whilst keeping a clean sheet and were hoping to do the same for the Darlington fixture. To the credit of the Ambermen they did just that. Exactly the same scoreline. Michael Gash and Tom Shaw secured the points.

Going into the match Jez George made no changes to the squad meaning that Adam Marriott did not have a place in the sixteen.

United started the match in a quick fashion intent on making their mark straightaway. Kevin Roberts sent in a cross from the right and the ball took a deflection which sent the ball out for a corner. Carew sent in the cross which was met by Josh Coulson whose stooping header was not powerful enough to trouble the Darlington keeper Russell.

A minute later Cambridge were on the prowl again Gash was pushed over thirty yards from goal and Ashley Carew lined up the kick chipped the ball which came off the head of a Darlington defender landing for Tom Shaw to put the ball back in the box only for it to be cleared by the Darlington defence.

For the next twenty minutes the game was pretty even although the visitors looked dangerous in areas. As there were exerting some pressure Cambridge took a deserved lead. Just before the goal Darlington got a warning when a corner ended with a Gash shot been blocked. Within a minute Gash got his goal. Ashley Carew sent in a lovely floated cross to the near post where Gash gleefully tucked in ahead of a static Darlo defence.

Darlington then had a chance to hit back when they had a free kick awarded to them. Brown sent the kick in but it was cleared by Naisbitt whose punch sent Cambridge away on the counter attack. Jennings took the ball forward and fed it to Michael Gash. The striker held it up waiting for support which came in the figure of Ashley Carew who received the ball and curled his shot wide. That chance could have put Cambridge out of sight and Jez George would have been sure to be very frustrated.

This bit of action was followed by two Darlington corners which came to nothing. Cambridge then upped the pressure and created some nice moves before a couple of injury stoppages brought the half to a messy end.

The second half started in a scrappy fashion with what seemed like a Darlington attempt to upset the Cambridge rhythm and try and possibly get an Amberman in trouble. Michael Gash was replaced by fifteen minutes into the half as the tackles began to bite. Exactly half way through the half Cambridge doubled their lead with a great goal from midfielder Tom Shaw. James Jennings floated in a cross which Shaw controlled and drilled in to the delight of the Ambernation. It was Shaw's second in two games after his effort against Ebbsfleet.

The rest of the game was littered with yellow cards and stoppages which saw The Ambermen see out another win with a clean sheet.
