Cambridge United got back to winning ways with a win at Twerton Park over Bath City. It certainly was a fantastic win in a crazy game. The match ended 3-4 with United getting the winner in the 85th minute.
Jez George made a couple of changes the enforced change was Harrison Dunk coming in for the injured Peter Winn. Tom Shaw returned to the midfield with striker Adam Marriott dropping to the bench and Luke Berry returning to the advanced midfield role in the "hole".
Other changes saw Michael Wylde and Liam Hughes return to the squad joining Marriott, Charles and Patrick on the bench.
United kicked off in the sky blue away kit on what you'd have to say was a blustery and windy start to the evening.
Bath's Lee Phillips was the first to register a shot but put wide past Danny Naisbitts goal. A minute later James Jennings was fouled and earned a free kick. Ashley Carew shot but it was saved by the keeper and cleared away by the Bath defence. Cambridge seem to settle the better with Tom Shaw shooting wide and Harrison Dunk jinking and shooting from the left but the finish ended up wide of the Bath goal.
On twelve minutes disaster struck. Despite having most of the early exchanges Cambridge fell behind. Bath earned a free kick and slack defending by United allowed Charlie Clough to sneak in and steer the ball home beyond Danny Naisbitt. Again Cambridge fall to an early set piece. This was to be the third time in three games. Jez George to put it nicely would be livid.
Within four minutes The Ambermen were level. A high ball was sent into Michael Gash who controlled on his chest and wonderfully slotted home. This was badly needed as Bath were just growing in confidence.
United straight away stepped up the pressure and earned a corner that was cleared. Down the other end Bath had to make a change before earning themselves a corner. From the corner the ball was drilled against a hand of Jennings which the referee judged to be handball. It seemed to be a dubious decision. Mark Canham stepped up and made no mistake from the sport. At this point Jez George must of thought it was not going to be his night.
Dunk, Berry, Carew and Gash all then had chances to score either side of a Lee Phillips miss which could of put Bath 3-1 up.
Five minutes from the break Cambridge drew level. Michael Gash done the hard work and teed up Ashley Carew whose shot on the turn beat the Bath keeper. It was a very smart finish which took The U's level into the break. It must be said that Jez George would have been handing out the 'hairdryer' treatment for the way his team conceded from a set piece yet again.

United started the second half quickly with Berry hitting the bar with a header and Gash having a shot go just over after good work from Berry again. This was either side of a Lee Phillips effort which was fired over. Minutes later Berry, who was fantastic all night headed of from a looping cross. From this moment Bath cranked up the pressure and took over proceedings. Mark Canham sent over a free kick which found the dangerous Charlie Clough who ghosted in but put wide. Obviously Jez Georges words fell on deaf ears.
Bath followed up with a corner where Jones just headed over. Then a mix up between Jennings and Naisbitt almost allowed for a comical goal. Minutes later another Canham free kick was again met by Clough who put the chance wide. I honestly believe if Jez George could of entered the field of play at that moment he would of.
With twenty five minutes left Jordan Patrick came on for Harrison Dunk. The following ten minutes was nip and tuck before Cambridge took the lead for the first time in the game. A corner taken by Carew was headed home by the impressive Luke Berry who just seems to get better with every game. As the celebrations ended Carew was replaced by Charles. Before you know it Bath drew level. Tom Shaw was adjudged to have handled in the box and a penalty was given. Another dubious decision. Before long Blue Square Premier bosses will be asking for professional full time referees. Canham slotted the penalty away making for an interesting finale.
With five minutes remaining Cambridge scored the winner. Tom Shaw struck a awesome dipping volley which gave the keeper no chance. 3-4. Absolute madness. What a game!
Shaw's goal sent The Ambernation wild with delight but their delight was cut short when the assistant referee showed five minutes added time. Jez George was not happy at the thought of maybe another decision going against his harshly judged team.
Thankfully The Ambermen saw the game out and took home a well deserved three points.
