BATH - CAMBRIDGE

Cambridge were at the end of another hiding as they lost 4-0 to Bath City at Twerton Park.

Cambridge made two changes to the line up with Jonathan Thorpe coming in at right back and Conal Platt coming in for the departed Robbie Willmott.

The Ambermen began very quickly with Daryl Clare releasing Simon Russell down the right side with Russell managing to claim an early corner. Full back James Jennings put in an inswinger which was punched clear by the Bath keeper to the edge of the box where Conal Platt was waiting, unfortunately Platt dallied allowing Bath to steal the ball and break away.

Simon Russell began to boss the game early on and linked up with Daryl Clare on two occasions but the portly forward messed up both opportunities. Moments later Russell again at the fore of the play fed Danny Wright but the big man could not turn away from his marker.

Cambridge kept pressing and managed to gain a second corner of the game which Jennings curled in but straight to the keeper who immediately started a counter attack which came to nothing.

For most of the rest of the half there was not much quality. All that could be said is that the U's had not conceded (yet) considering how many they been letting in.

The second half had hardly started and yes you have guessed one nil Bath. Canham's free kick rebounded off the bar and bounced in off the hapless Brown. This now was a big test for Martin Lings men. Considering creative men Robbie Willmott and Wayne Gray had left the club the previous day it was hard to see where the Ambermen were going to get a goal from.

For the next ten minutes it was end to end but the quality was lacking from both sides especially the U's.

With fifteen minutes remaining Bath were awarded a penalty as Jennings seemed to brush up against his man in the penalty area. Mohamed wrestled the ball off Lee Phillips for this crucial spot kick. Kaid Mohamed sent Simon Brown the wrong way to all but secure the three points for the hosts.

With over three hundred of the Amberarmy in attendance it was sad to see that the U's had not given them the slimmest of hopes.

Ten minutes from the end youngster Jonathan Thorpe was sent off for a second bookable offence which left the U's to repel a now rampant Bath for the rest of the game.

Further goals from Scott Murray and Mohammed finished off a feeble Cambridge and send them home pointless. There can be no excuse from Martin Ling. Time is running out for the former Leyton Orient manager.
